Netflix has expanded its sports portfolio by acquiring exclusive Canadian broadcast rights for the 2027 and 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The deal means that fans across Canada will be able to watch every match live on the platform, available to all subscription tiers.
In addition to full tournament coverage, Netflix will produce studio programming, pre-match analysis, behind-the-scenes features, and original documentaries in the build-up to each competition.
Strengthening its Position in North American Women’s Football
This move builds on Netflix’s existing U.S. rights deal for both tournaments, signed in late 2024, and replaces long-time Canadian broadcaster Bell Media, which previously aired the event through its TSN network.
The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be hosted by Brazil from June 24 to July 25, with the 2031 host expected to be announced in the coming months. The U.S. and Mexico — co-hosts of the 2026 Men’s World Cup — are currently the only confirmed bidders, though Canada could be invited to join, particularly as the 2031 edition will expand to 48 teams.
With over 9 million Netflix subscribers in Canada and more favorable time zones for both tournaments, viewership numbers are expected to rise significantly.
A Growing Sports Portfolio
Netflix’s women’s sports coverage has already delivered strong numbers. The Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano boxing match — part of the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul event earlier this year — drew close to 50 million households, highlighting the appetite for elite women’s competition.
Alongside football and boxing, Netflix also holds global rights to WWE Raw, which began streaming on the platform in January 2025.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said the Women’s World Cup deal aligns perfectly with the platform’s ambitions:
“Our record-breaking success with Amanda Serrano vs. Katie Taylor demonstrated the massive appetite for women’s sports and live programming. I’ve seen the fandom for the FIFA Women’s World Cup grow tremendously, from the electric atmosphere in France in 2019 to the incredible energy across Australia and New Zealand in 2023.”
