Kayo Sports has renewed its multi-year distribution deal with American multiplatform sports media giant ESPN, reinforcing its position as a premier destination for US sports fans in Australia. The agreement, which also involves Foxtel, continues to bring top-tier American leagues—including the NBA, NFL, MLB, UFC, WNBA, and NHL—to Australian viewers.
Foxtel Group CEO Patrick Delany highlighted the strength and longevity of the partnership:
“We have enjoyed a wonderful, world-leading relationship with ESPN that spans more than two decades—a remarkable achievement in the dynamic world of media.”
The renewal combines ESPN’s premium US sports content with Foxtel’s extensive Australian sports portfolio, including AFL, NRL, and cricket. This synergy cements Kayo Sports and Foxtel as the ultimate sports streaming and broadcast hubs for Australian fans.
A significant addition to the deal is Foxtel Business becoming the exclusive distributor of ESPN content to commercial venues such as licensed premises, expanding ESPN’s reach beyond home audiences to hospitality and retail sectors.
Foxtel Media will continue managing advertising opportunities on Kayo Sports, allowing advertisers to tap into the growing demand for US sports content.
Kylie Watson-Wheeler, Senior Vice President and Managing Director at The Walt Disney Company Australia and New Zealand and Head of ESPN Asia-Pacific, reaffirmed the partnership’s importance:
“Our relationship with Foxtel is one we value immensely at ESPN. We’re thrilled that Foxtel and Kayo Sports will remain part of the ESPN ecosystem in Australia.”
ESPN’s portfolio includes marquee events such as the NBA Finals, NFL Super Bowl, MLB World Series, NCAA March Madness, and NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs—events that continue to captivate Australian audiences.
The renewed partnership also ensures Kayo Sports and Foxtel will maintain comprehensive UFC coverage. ESPN’s UFC Fight Night broadcasts will complement Kayo Sports and Foxtel’s UFC pay-per-view events, offering fans a complete fight experience.
Leveraging Strategic Sports Media Partnerships
For sports rights holders, broadcasters, and digital platforms, the Kayo-ESPN-Foxtel deal exemplifies how long-term partnerships can expand audience reach and monetisation avenues. As streaming platforms grow alongside traditional broadcasters, integrated multi-platform deals unlock value through targeted advertising, venue distribution, and premium live content.
Key considerations for stakeholders include:
- Expanding beyond residential viewers by entering commercial and hospitality markets
- Leveraging multi-sport portfolios to build comprehensive fan engagement ecosystems
- Aligning premium global content with local market preferences to drive subscription growt
