Major League Baseball and Apple have quietly made broadcasting history. For the first time in professional sports, live game footage captured on an iPhone has been integrated directly into a live broadcast.
During tonight’s “Friday Night Baseball” game between the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers, Apple TV+ will feature camera shots filmed on the new iPhone 17 Pro, including a unique angle from atop Fenway Park’s iconic Green Monster.
This comes just a week after Apple tested the technology during Clayton Kershaw’s final regular-season start at Dodger Stadium — though without making it public at the time. According to Sports Business Journal, the integration followed a two-month testing process before Apple and MLB were confident the iPhone was broadcast-ready.
Inside the Broadcast Setup
The iPhone 17 Pro is being deployed in four positions for the Fenway broadcast:
- Inside the home dugout
- A roaming right-field camera
- Atop the Green Monster
- Various in-stadium fan and atmosphere shots
The aim isn’t to replace traditional broadcast cameras but to capture unique, intimate, and mobile perspectives — from dugout reactions to fan energy and pregame rituals like batting practice and introductions.
Why It Matters
This innovation signals Apple’s intent to merge its consumer tech ecosystem with live sports broadcasting. For MLB, it’s another way to deepen engagement, particularly with younger and digital-first audiences who are accustomed to iPhone-quality content in their daily lives.
