WWE has accelerated its transition to ESPN, moving its premium live events (PLEs) from NBCUniversal’s Peacockstreaming service almost five months ahead of schedule.
The shift follows WWE’s five-year, $1.6 billion agreement with ESPN, struck earlier this month, which now begins on September 20 with Wrestlepalooza at Indianapolis’ Gainbridge Fieldhouse (18,000 capacity).
The deal covers WWE’s flagship events including WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Royal Rumble, Survivor Series, and Money in the Bank.
Why the Move Happened Early
WWE argued that its two-night formats for WrestleMania and SummerSlam allowed it to meet its contractual PLE commitments to Peacock ahead of schedule. As a result, ESPN takes over without requiring a buyout of the remaining rights.
Peacock will air its final WWE PLE — Clash in Paris — on August 31. However, NBCU retains elements of the WWE package:
- Access to WWE’s video library through 2025.
- WWE NXT developmental PLEs until 2026.
- Exclusive coverage of Saturday Night Main Event up to four times per year, including two in 2025.
Elsewhere, Friday Night SmackDown continues on USA Network, while Monday Night Raw remains tied to Netflix under its global deal announced in January.
ESPN’s Streaming Strategy
The WWE partnership coincides with ESPN’s launch of its new direct-to-consumer (DTC) platform, branded simply ESPN.
- Pricing: $29.99/month for an unlimited plan, offering access to all ESPN linear channels plus ESPN+, ESPN3, SECN+, ACCNX, and ESPN on ABC.
- Volume: ESPN promises 47,000 live events per year on the platform.
- Bundles: Option to combine with Disney+ and Hulu for the same $29.99 (first 12 months).
- Features: Personalized experiences, multiview, live stats, integrated betting info, and fantasy sports connectivity.
The DTC launch is timed to align with the NFL season, college football, and the US Open tennis — ensuring immediate subscriber pull.
