Unrivaled, the 3-on-3 women’s basketball league founded by Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, has announced its first expansion. After a successful debut in 2025, the league will grow from six to eight teams for its second season in 2026.
The two new franchises, named Breeze and Hive, were unveiled as part of the league’s vision to establish itself as the premier offseason destination for WNBA stars.
Expansion and Star Power
With the addition of Breeze and Hive, Unrivaled increases its roster from 36 to 48 permanent player slots, alongside an additional six development players who will be based in Miami to step in as needed. This ensures more opportunities for players to showcase their talent and supplement their WNBA incomes.
Among the most notable players linked to the expansion is Paige Bueckers. The former UConn star and current Dallas Wings rookie standout already has an equity stake in Unrivaled through an NIL deal she signed while in college. She is expected to participate in 2026 and could be a captain for one of the new franchises.
The biggest name not yet connected to Unrivaled is Caitlin Clark. League president Alex Bazzell has said there is “no current dialogue” with Clark, but her potential inclusion remains the league’s most coveted storyline.
Why This Expansion Matters
Unrivaled’s growth comes at a critical time. With CBA negotiations looming and the possibility of a 2026 WNBA work stoppage, the league provides players with a platform to earn, compete, and grow their brands outside of the WNBA calendar.
The 3-on-3 format, shorter games, and Miami base give Unrivaled a distinctive edge—both as a showcase for elite talent and as a lifestyle-driven property that merges basketball, culture, and entertainment.
365247 Consulting Insight
Unrivaled’s expansion highlights several important themes for women’s sports:
- Player-driven leagues are emerging as viable businesses. By giving equity to stars like Bueckers, Unrivaled creates deeper commitment and shared upside.
- Format innovation matters. The 3-on-3 setup is designed for pace, storytelling, and digital distribution—key factors in engaging new audiences.
- Strategic timing is crucial. With uncertainty around the WNBA calendar, Unrivaled positions itself as both a safety net and an aspirational platform.
The bigger question: How far can player-founded leagues scale—and what does this model mean for the next wave of athlete-led ventures in sport?
