Toyota to Build ‘Factory of the Future’ in Toyota City

Toyota has revealed plans for a state-of-the-art production facility in its hometown of Toyota City, Japan — a project the automaker says will redefine how it builds cars and operates its manufacturing lines.

The upcoming site will feature advanced technologies aimed at streamlining vehicle production while fostering a more inclusive and adaptive work environment. Among the most notable upgrades is the shift to gigacasting, a process where a car’s body will be made from just three main modular components. Toyota expects this approach to replace hundreds of individual parts, cutting both development timelines and plant investment costs by about 50%.

The facility will also introduce self-propelling production technology, allowing vehicles to move through the assembly process without traditional conveyor systems. This change is intended to simplify operations and reduce equipment needs. In addition, Toyota plans to adopt an All-in-One Team model, placing design, manufacturing, and operational teams under one roof to accelerate decision-making and improve responses to real-time challenges.

Located in the Teioucho area of Toyota City — near the company’s headquarters and automotive museum — the plant is set to begin operations in the early 2030s. Toyota is currently securing the land for the project.

The automaker has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining an annual production capacity of 3 million vehicles in Japan. It currently operates 16 domestic factories, including facilities run by its Daihatsu subsidiary. While Toyota has not detailed the future of its existing Toyota City plants, the emphasis on maintaining — rather than increasing — production capacity raises the possibility of restructuring or consolidating current sites.
