In a development that could reshape India’s fast-evolving electric mobility landscape, Indian conglomerate JSW Group is accelerating its plans to debut a new-energy vehicle (NEV) brand by 2027, leveraging technology and component support from China’s Chery Automobile.
This strategic tie-up reflects a new wave of cooperation between Indian industrial powerhouses and global automotive innovators, particularly in the electric and hybrid vehicle segments. At its core, the collaboration is designed to facilitate localised, large-scale EV production in India — a critical frontier market for global automotive transformation.
No Equity, All Engineering: Inside the Deal Structure
What makes this partnership particularly notable is its structure: no equity stake or joint venture is involved — a clear nod to India’s investment restrictions on Chinese firms in sensitive sectors, especially in the aftermath of heightened geopolitical tensions since 2020.
Instead, the collaboration is purely technical and commercial. Chery will license its EV technology and supply key components to JSW, reportedly in exchange for a one-time technology transfer fee and ongoing royalty payments. This enables JSW to tap into world-class EV capabilities while retaining full control and ownership of the forthcoming Indian brand.
Chery’s EV Know-How Powers JSW’s Ambition
Chery, already a rising global force in new-energy vehicles, brings significant strengths in areas such as electric powertrains, hybrid systems, and intelligent cockpit architecture — capabilities that are critical for any player aiming to scale competitively in the electric passenger vehicle segment.
JSW is said to be closely evaluating several Chery platforms, including the iCar SUV range, for potential adaptation to the Indian consumer and regulatory environment.
Notably, this brand will be entirely separate from JSW’s existing JV with China’s SAIC Motor, which operates MG Motor in India. The upcoming EV venture will allow JSW to carve out a new identity in the domestic passenger EV segment — from the ground up.
Building the Future in Maharashtra
Beyond licensing and component supply, JSW is also building out manufacturing infrastructure. The group is reportedly constructing production facilities in Maharashtra, setting the stage for fully localised assembly and distribution from 2027 onward. This is in line with India’s push for domestic EV production under various government-linked incentive schemes.
JSW also has broader ambitions in clean mobility — with plans to roll out electric trucks and buses as early as next year, marking a vertical expansion beyond passenger vehicles.
A Two-Track Bet: MG Today, JSW EV Tomorrow
While the new NEV brand takes shape, JSW remains actively invested in its MG Motor JV, and may even look to increase its shareholding by buying more equity from SAIC. Parth Jindal, Director at JSW MG Motor India, has publicly stated the group’s intent to deepen its control over MG’s India operations, while keeping both ventures distinct.
In doing so, JSW is executing a dual-pronged mobility strategy — evolving MG into a premium Chinese-Indian JV offering, while building a fully homegrown electric label leveraging licensed Chinese tech.
Global Context: Chery Expands While India Localises
This India foray also fits squarely into Chery’s global ambitions. The company has recently announced a $1 billion factory in Turkey and is exploring a $1.5 billion IPO in Hong Kong. It also confirmed plans to enter the UK automotive market under its own brand this summer — all signs of a brand with an eye on becoming a dominant global EV player.
For JSW, the deal reflects a broader national trend: strategic tech partnerships without foreign ownership, a model that increasingly defines how Indian companies are navigating the geopolitical sensitivities of 21st-century manufacturing.
Strategic Takeaway:
The JSW–Chery alliance signals more than just a new EV brand — it’s a symbol of how industrial policy, global tech flows, and geopolitical balancing are shaping the future of mobility in India. With local production, dual-brand architecture, and global tech backing, JSW is positioning itself as a serious player in the race to define India’s electric vehicle future.
