SoftBank to Acquire Foxconn’s Ohio EV Plant

SoftBank Group Corp is reportedly set to purchase Foxconn Technology Group’s electric vehicle facility in Ohio, a move tied to the launch of its ambitious Stargate data center initiative.

The Stargate project — announced in January by U.S. President Donald Trump — represents a potential $500 billion private sector investment aimed at building advanced AI infrastructure across the United States. Backed by SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle, the initiative is expected to generate over 100,000 jobs nationwide.

According to Bloomberg, SoftBank had been seeking ways to finance and operationalize Stargate when it approached Foxconn, a major Apple supplier, to collaborate on building data centers and related infrastructure. This discussion ultimately led to the agreement for SoftBank to acquire the Ohio plant.

While final details remain undisclosed, reports suggest that the Ohio facility could be repurposed into a large-scale data center to support the AI-driven infrastructure rollout.

SoftBank has not issued an official statement, and Foxconn has yet to publicly comment on the reported deal.

If completed, the acquisition would mark a significant milestone in SoftBank’s push to establish itself as a key player in AI infrastructure development while repurposing existing U.S. manufacturing assets for next-generation technology needs.
