Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o, one of Africa’s most decorated footballers and current president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), is facing fresh allegations of financial misconduct.
According to documents reviewed by Sporting Intelligence, Eto’o has been accused of diverting funds linked to international friendlies, including a $600,000 match fee from a 2023 friendly between Mexico and Cameroon in San Diego.
A coalition of Cameroonian football leaders, represented by the Los Angeles-based Nsahlai Law Firm, has written to both the FBI and the Southern District of New York, urging them to investigate potential wire fraud, money laundering, tax fraud, and conspiracy.
Why the Allegations Matter
The legal filing draws parallels with the 2015 FIFA corruption scandal, in which dozens of officials and executives were prosecuted for exploiting US-based match infrastructure, media rights, and financial systems to launder money and defraud federations.
The Nsahlai Law Firm argues that since the disputed fee related to a match staged on US soil, American prosecutors have jurisdiction to pursue the case.
Beyond this specific incident, the broader investigation will examine:
- Allegations of match fees for multiple Cameroon friendlies being routed into a personal bank account in Qatar.
- Documents showing precise cash requests tied to Eto’o for personal benefit.
- A 20-page contract relating to another irregular fixture.
- Reaction from former Fecafoot executives, who claim the federation’s credibility has been damaged.
A Troubling Pattern
Eto’o, a three-time UEFA Champions League winner and all-time top scorer in Africa Cup of Nations history, has faced increasing scrutiny since moving into football administration.
Critics argue his tenure at Fecafoot has been marred by controversy—ranging from disputes with referees and governance concerns to now, alleged financial misconduct on the international stage.
If substantiated, these latest allegations risk not only damaging Eto’o’s personal reputation but also further eroding global confidence in Cameroonian football governance.
