Rumble Eyes Strategic Move into AI Cloud with Potential $1.17 Billion Bid for Northern Data

U.S.-based video platform and cloud services provider Rumble is exploring a major acquisition in the European AI infrastructure space, with a possible $1.17 billion (€1 billion) offer for German technology firm Northern Data. If completed, the move could significantly expand Rumble’s capabilities in high-performance computing and AI-driven cloud services.

At the heart of the potential deal are two of Northern Data’s key business units: Taiga, its GPU-intensive cloud division, and Ardent, a large-scale data center operation. Taiga is known for its deep inventory of advanced Nvidia hardware, including tens of thousands of H100 chips and over two thousand next-generation H200 units — components that have become highly sought after in the AI race.

Northern Data has confirmed that its board is reviewing the approach and is open to continuing talks. Under the indicative proposal, Rumble would exchange just over two of its shares for each Northern Data share, giving the German company’s investors roughly a third of the combined business.

The offer, at its current terms, would come at a notable discount to Northern Data’s last closing price — a factor that suggests negotiations could push valuations higher before any binding agreement is reached. Major shareholder Tether, best known for operating one of the world’s largest stablecoins, has already signaled support for the transaction, provided Northern Data divests its cryptocurrency mining arm. Proceeds from that sale would be used to reduce an outstanding Tether loan.

Should the acquisition go ahead, Tether is expected to become a key customer for Rumble’s expanded GPU operations under a multi-year supply arrangement.

While the discussions are ongoing, both companies have cautioned that there is no guarantee the talks will result in a finalized deal. If successful, the acquisition could position Rumble as a significant player in the global AI cloud services market, with a transatlantic footprint and infrastructure to support the rapid scaling of machine learning applications.
