Plans for a $3 billion acquisition of Windsurf, a prominent AI coding tool, by OpenAI have officially unraveled, marking a significant shift in the race for dominance in generative AI development. The collapse of the deal, initially reported across multiple outlets on Friday, signals deeper strategic realignments — and intensifies the competition between OpenAI and Google DeepMind.
Windsurf, known for building sophisticated AI-assisted code generation systems, had captured interest for its enterprise-grade tooling. But as of this week, co-founder Varun Mohan, fellow founder Douglas Chen, and several core engineers have joined Google DeepMind, where they’ll reportedly contribute to the continued development of the Gemini AI platform.
While Google will not take ownership or equity in Windsurf, it will now hold a nonexclusive license to portions of its core technology. According to a late Friday report by The Wall Street Journal, that licensing agreement is worth approximately $2.4 billion.
A Google spokesperson confirmed that the team will support DeepMind’s “agentic coding” initiatives — a reference to the next frontier in autonomous AI-driven software development.
