Mahindra Targets UK EV Market, Banking on India-UK Free Trade Agreement

Indian automotive giant Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) is gearing up to enter the UK electric vehicle (EV) market, with plans to leverage the opportunities created by the upcoming India–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The company aims for EVs to represent 30% of its total sales by 2030, positioning itself as a significant player in both domestic and international sustainable mobility markets.

Design Hub in Oxfordshire at the Core of Strategy

The expansion will be supported by Mahindra’s Mahindra Advanced Design Europe (M.A.D.E) facility in Banbury, Oxfordshire. This UK-based design and engineering hub is tasked with shaping the company’s next-generation electric portfolio, ensuring products meet the style, performance, and regulatory expectations of European consumers.

FTA as a Strategic Accelerator

Mahindra’s leadership views the India–UK FTA as a transformative opportunity. By reducing trade barriers, the agreement is expected to facilitate smoother export channels for Indian-made EVs, while also encouraging a healthy exchange of goods and technology between the two countries.

The company believes the FTA will not only benefit its own international ambitions but will also provide a boost to India’s broader automotive sector, opening pathways for increased manufacturing and innovation.

India’s Growing Potential as an Auto Manufacturing Hub

Mahindra sees India as having the potential to become a global hub for automobile production, thanks to improvements in ease of doing business, logistics efficiency, and competitive manufacturing costs. This vision extends beyond the company itself, with the belief that India should attract top global automakers to set up production, fostering competition and raising quality standards across the industry.

Competitive Edge in R&D and Cost Efficiency

With robust R&D capabilities and the ability to produce high-quality vehicles at lower costs, Mahindra considers itself well-positioned to compete with global brands. The company views increased competition not as a threat, but as a catalyst for innovation — ultimately benefiting consumers through better product choice and value.

The Bigger Picture

By combining design expertise from its UK facility with cost-effective manufacturing in India, Mahindra aims to deliver EVs that can stand toe-to-toe with international offerings. The strategy not only aligns with global sustainability goals but also reinforces India’s potential role as a central player in the future of automotive manufacturing.
