The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended USA Cricket (USAC) with immediate effect, citing repeated governance failures and reputational damage to the sport. While the suspension will not impact the USA’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka (February 2025) or the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, it represents a major intervention in one of cricket’s most strategically important growth markets.
Why the ICC Took Action?
The ICC Board’s decision followed a virtual meeting on Tuesday and comes just two months after USAC was granted a three-month reprieve at the ICC’s Annual General Meeting in July 2025.
At that time, the ICC required USAC to:
- Conduct free and fair elections
- Overhaul its governance framework
- Work toward recognition as a National Governing Body (NGB) with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC)
- Avoid any actions that might harm cricket’s Olympic inclusion or reputation
Despite these conditions, USAC failed to demonstrate meaningful progress. The ICC cited breaches including:
- Lack of a functional governance structure
- Failure to achieve NGB status with USOPC
- Repeated actions that harmed cricket’s credibility both in the U.S. and internationally
What Happens Next?
Under suspension, the ICC will temporarily manage and administer USA’s national teams, ensuring continuity for players and coaches. The ICC stressed its priority remains protecting the athletes and safeguarding cricket’s Olympic future.
A Normalisation Committee, chaired by Jay Shah, has already developed a roadmap for reform. Key steps include:
- Appointment of three independent directors to USAC’s Board
- Resignation of the current Board
- Fresh elections
- Application for NGB status with the USOPC
- Constitutional reforms in consultation with the ICC
- Ongoing monitoring by independent stakeholders
Only by implementing these demonstrable changes will USAC be eligible for reinstatement.
Why the U.S. Matters for Cricket?
The suspension underscores the tension between cricket’s global ambitions and the governance shortcomings in emerging markets. The U.S. is central to the sport’s expansion strategy:
- Cricket is confirmed for LA28 Olympics, with the U.S. expected to field both men’s and women’s teams.
- Major League Cricket (MLC) has already attracted significant investment from IPL franchises and tech entrepreneurs.
- The U.S. is viewed as a commercial growth engine for cricket, given its massive sports economy and South Asian diaspora.
For the ICC, ensuring the sport’s credibility in America is not optional — it is essential.
