The iconic Crystal Palace National Sports Centre is set to return as a premier hub for UK athletics, with a comprehensive redevelopment now underway. Appointed by the Greater London Authority (GLA), Morgan Sindall Construction will lead the ambitious project, which is scheduled for completion in 2028.
Located at the intersection of five London boroughs—Bromley, Croydon, Lewisham, Lambeth, and Southwark—the Grade II-listed site spans over 10 hectares and holds a storied place in British sporting history. From hosting the first Women’s FA Cup final to staging legendary performances by the likes of Steve Backley, Sebastian Coe, and Zola Budd, Crystal Palace has long been a stage for greatness.
Now, it’s being reimagined to meet modern standards and future ambitions.
A New Era for British Sports Infrastructure
The redevelopment will completely revitalise the venue’s key facilities, including:
- Athletics stadium and tracks
- Multiple swimming pools (50m competition, dive pool, and 25m pool)
- Indoor training spaces and external pitches
- Restoration of the iconic diving tower
- All-weather, all-hour training capabilities
In a first for the venue’s 60-year history, the upgraded centre will be fully electric, enabled by a £23 million commitment from the Mayor’s Green Finance Fund. The project is a cornerstone of Mayor Sadiq Khan’s vision to improve sports accessibility and sustainability across the capital.
Preserving Heritage While Powering the Future
A world-class design team has been assembled to merge tradition with transformation:
- FaulknerBrowns – Leisure refurb specialists
- Woo Architects – Olympic masterplanners
- Max Fordham – Decarbonisation experts
- Alan Baxter Associates – Structural heritage advisors
Key architectural upgrades include a new glazed acoustic screen to separate wet and dry zones, enhancing visitor experience and reducing noise between activities.
Social Impact and Sustainability at the Core
Beyond infrastructure, the redevelopment emphasises community and climate impact:
- A Knowledge Quad for local training and skills (launching 2025)
- Investment through a Just Transition Fund
- Employment and education initiatives across all five boroughs
- Use of CarboniCa, Morgan Sindall’s in-house carbon management platform, to monitor emissions through the design and build phases
The project also includes better public realm connectivity, with improved access to nearby railway stations and upgraded pedestrian infrastructure.
What This Means for UK Sport
The Crystal Palace redevelopment is more than a facelift. It’s a blueprint for the future of athlete-first, community-driven, and climate-resilient sports facilities in the UK.
By 2028, the site is expected to:
- Function as the only 24/7 athletics and swimming centre in the UK
- Support both elite performance and grassroots participation
- Reclaim its place as a flagship national sports venue
Richard Dobson, London area director at Morgan Sindall, summed it up:
“This is more than a construction project — it’s a cultural regeneration of one of Britain’s most iconic sports venues. We’re honoured to help shape its next chapter.”
