Capgemini to Transform the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 Viewing Experience

As Principal Partner of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025, Capgemini has introduced TryZone IQ, a generative AI-powered innovation that will debut at this year’s tournament. This marks the first-ever use of generative AI at a Rugby World Cup, designed to support commentary teams by delivering real-time match analysis and contextual insights across broadcast, social, and digital platforms.

AI Meets Rugby

With over half of sports fans now relying on AI-driven insights and 67% seeking a single platform for aggregated content, TryZone IQ has been developed to provide fans with timely, relevant analysis. Capgemini, in collaboration with World Rugby and Opta, designed the system to convert complex match data into concise narratives that enhance storytelling for both seasoned followers and new audiences.

The platform processes historic and live data, updating every minute with details such as player actions, team dynamics, and match statistics. These inputs are transformed into concise text-based insights by the AI engine, which are then reviewed and refined by human analysts to ensure accuracy and context. This human-AI collaboration enhances live commentary and creates engaging, real-time updates for fans across digital and social media.

New Visual Tools for Fans

Capgemini also contributed to the development of two new broadcast visualizations:

  • Expected Tries: Similar to football’s ‘xG’ metric, it evaluates how many try-scoring opportunities a team has created compared to actual tries scored.
  • Attacking Threat: A dynamic on-screen power bar that translates live metrics such as possession, territory, and momentum into an easy-to-understand percentage score, showing which team is most likely to score next.

Driving Engagement in a Growing Sport

Women’s rugby continues its rapid growth, with more than 20 million viewers expected to tune in for the 2025 tournament. By simplifying data into accessible, story-driven insights, TryZone IQ aims to help first-time viewers better understand the game while enriching the experience for existing fans.

Steven Webb, UK Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at Capgemini, explained: “With TryZone IQ, we’re infusing the transformative power of generative AI into the heart of the game to meet the expectations of fans today who are looking for real-time stories, context, and clarity as they follow the sport.”

Capgemini’s Rugby Commitment

Capgemini has long-standing ties to rugby, having supported both men’s and women’s World Cups, the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, and the Women in Rugby initiative. Since 2022, the company has also backed the Capgemini Women in Rugby Leadership Programme, fostering a new generation of female leaders in the sport.

As women’s rugby reaches new heights, the introduction of TryZone IQ highlights how technology and sport can converge to expand accessibility, deepen fan engagement, and bring a fresh dimension to one of rugby’s most important global tournaments.
