LaLiga is set to begin a new chapter in South Asia as it locks in a five-year exclusive broadcast deal with UAE-based streaming platform Begin, starting from the 2025–26 season.
The agreement grants Begin the rights to broadcast LaLiga’s top-tier and LaLiga2 matches across Pakistan and Bangladesh initially, with Sri Lanka added to the coverage area beginning in 2026–27. The deal runs through the 2029–30 campaign and positions Begin as LaLiga’s new digital gateway to the region.
This move marks a strategic pivot after LaLiga’s previous rights partner, Galaxy Racer, exited the contract just one year into a six-year agreement. Sources suggest the exit was linked to distribution challenges—an area Begin seems specifically equipped to address.
More Than Just Streaming: A Structural Bet on the Region
Begin is not a conventional OTT player. Led by CEO Jonathan Mark, the platform is positioning itself as a scalable, anti-piracy, and commercially viable infrastructure for premium sports content in markets historically plagued by illegal streaming and fragmented monetization models.
In a statement, Mark emphasized Begin’s long-term ambition: to support grassroots football development, drive local talent uplift, and create a structured content ecosystem where leagues, brands, and fans can interact securely.
For LaLiga, this is more than a content distribution deal—it’s a regional positioning play. With a growing youth demographic, high football affinity, and an underserved digital sports audience, South Asia remains a commercially untapped goldmine for global football properties.
Key Implications:
- Anti-piracy focus is a clear strategic advantage, especially in Pakistan where illicit streaming undermines traditional rights models.
- Begin’s expansion into Sri Lanka reflects a gradual market scaling strategy, possibly aimed at broader regional aggregation.
- The deal may also set a precedent for smaller, tech-led platforms to win exclusive rights over traditional broadcasters in emerging markets.
As LaLiga competes with the Premier League and other global football leagues for attention in South Asia, the success of this deal could become a case study in how rights holders can balance reach, revenue, and regional relevance in the digital age.
