BBC Sport Secures Landmark Free-to-Air Deal for UEFA Women’s Champions League Through 2030

Women’s football in the UK has received another major boost after BBC Sport confirmed an exclusive free-to-air broadcast deal for the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) through to 2030. The agreement ensures that millions of fans across the country will have direct access to Europe’s top women’s club competition – including the final itself – on both BBC TV and BBC iPlayer.

A Star-Studded Kickoff

The deal begins with two marquee fixtures in November:

  • Manchester United vs Paris Saint-Germain on 12 November (8pm)
  • Chelsea vs Barcelona on 20 November (8pm)

The matchups will showcase a wealth of global talent. Fans can expect to see England internationals Hannah Hampton, Lucy Bronze, Niamh Charles, Keira Walsh, Lauren James, and Aggie Beever-Jones going head-to-head with Barcelona’s star-studded squad led by three-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí.

What the Deal Covers

Under the five-year agreement, BBC Sport will show:

  • Up to seven live matches each season, including:
    • The UWCL Final
    • One full semi-final (both legs)
    • Four earlier round matches
  • Comprehensive highlights from every game, not just those broadcast live
  • Digital-first content including weekly clips of goals, saves, and key moments across BBC Sport’s website, app, and social media platforms

The agreement also expands into BBC Sport’s women’s football TikTok channel (@BBCWomensFootball), aimed at younger audiences increasingly consuming sport via mobile and social platforms.

Integrated, Multi-Platform Coverage

Beyond traditional broadcasts, the BBC is prioritising digital engagement. Fans will be able to:

  • Access highlights and analysis across BBC Sport’s website and app
  • Follow live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live for key fixtures
  • Enjoy social-first clips designed to reach new and diverse audiences

This strategy represents a deliberate shift to meet fans where they are – blending traditional viewing with short-form digital storytelling.

Why This Matters for Women’s Football

The partnership comes at a time of accelerating growth in the women’s game. Last season, Arsenal became the only English club to win the UWCL twice, reinforcing the competition’s importance as a stage for domestic and international talent.

By offering free-to-air access, the BBC is ensuring that the UWCL isn’t limited to subscription audiences, but is positioned as a mainstream sporting property. This will:

  • Expand visibility of top European women’s football
  • Attract new commercial partners aligned with digital-first strategies
  • Fuel grassroots engagement by giving young fans consistent access to role models

Leadership Views

Alex Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport, described the deal as a turning point:
“Bringing the UEFA Women’s Champions League to a free-to-air audience is huge, but what makes this truly game-changing is our digital offering. Our multi-platform strategy means fans won’t just watch the biggest games live on TV – they’ll experience the best moments across our website, app, and social platforms. We’re making the competition more accessible, visible, and connected than ever before.”

Guy-Laurent Epstein, UC3 Co-Managing Director, echoed the sentiment:
“The BBC’s free-to-air and digital-first approach will play a key role in making the competition more accessible and engaging for fans across the UK.”

The BBC’s long-term commitment to the UEFA Women’s Champions League represents both a symbolic and practical milestone for women’s football. By pairing prime-time broadcast coverage with digital-first distribution, the agreement ensures the competition is not only seen but embedded into the daily sporting culture of millions of UK fans.

As the women’s game continues to surge globally, this deal underscores a simple truth: visibility drives value. And with the BBC on board until 2030, the UWCL has never been more visible.
