French football is taking a bold step into direct-to-consumer (DTC) broadcasting — and Amazon is on board.
The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) has announced a carriage agreement with Prime Video to distribute Ligue 1 Plus, its newly launched in-house streaming service. The channel goes live on August 11, 2025, offering fans access to eight live matches per Ligue 1 matchday from the upcoming 2025/26 season.
Notably, viewers will be able to subscribe to Ligue 1 Plus on Prime Video without holding a standard Prime membership — a move aimed at widening reach beyond Amazon’s existing customer base.
Pricing & Packages
Fans can take advantage of an introductory annual plan at €12.99 ($15.12) per month until August 31. After that, subscription options will include:
- Annual commitment: €14.99 ($17.66) per month
- Monthly plan: €19.99 ($23.54) with no long-term contract
These rates undercut last season’s primary domestic broadcaster, DAZN, which charged significantly higher for similar access.
Coverage & Content
From August 15, Ligue 1 Plus will provide:
- Eight live games per round exclusively in France
- A delayed broadcast of the ninth fixture, held by BeIN Sports
- Two magazine shows and additional shoulder programming, produced in partnership with Mediawan
Prime Video joins Bouygues Telecom, Free, Orange, SFR, and DAZN in carrying the channel domestically.
Strategic Shift for French Football
The LFP is positioning Ligue 1 Plus as a long-term project to reduce clubs’ reliance on domestic broadcast rights.
“We are taking control of our own destiny,” said Nicolas de Tavernost, Director General of LFP Media. “Returns will be progressive, but this is about building an asset for the future.”
LFP President Vincent Labrune stressed that while the domestic rights market remains challenging, the league has diversified income through international, commercial, and UEFA-related revenues. He described the launch as “risky, exciting, and disruptive” — part of an effort to create an innovative league product that French football owns outright.
A Familiar Partner
Prime Video previously held Ligue 1 domestic rights between 2020 and 2024, stepping in after Mediapro’s collapse. In the UK, it also streamed Ligue 1’s pay-per-view service in the 2024/25 season before this French domestic rollout.
With this move, Ligue 1 is joining a growing trend of sports leagues bypassing traditional broadcasters in favour of direct, fan-focused distribution — a shift that could reshape the economics of the game in France.
