Ed Sheeran x FC Barcelona: Spotify’s Music-Football Fusion Enters a New Era

The partnership between Spotify and FC Barcelona continues to redefine how sport and culture intersect. This month, global pop icon Ed Sheeran takes centre stage in the latest edition of Barcelona’s music-meets-football jersey takeover — the seventh since the collaboration began in 2022.

For the upcoming El Clásico on October 26, Barcelona’s men’s team will wear jerseys featuring the logo of Sheeran’s brand-new album “Play”, replacing Spotify’s logo for one of world football’s biggest stages. The women’s team, FC Barcelona Femení, will debut the design earlier, on October 19 against Granada in the Liga F.

A Cultural Crossover Between Music and Football

The “Play” logo celebrates the release of Sheeran’s eighth studio album, symbolizing joy, connection, and creativity — themes deeply aligned with Barça’s own identity of expressive football and global inclusivity.

“Seeing my new album Play on the Barça shirt is something I’m proud of,” said Sheeran. “I’m a big fan of football and FC Barcelona, and I love that we get to merge the worlds of music and football in such a fun way.”

With over 92 million monthly Spotify listeners and 14 songs in the Billions Club, Sheeran joins an elite group of artists to feature on Barça’s shirt — including Drake, Rosalía, The Rolling Stones, KAROL G, Coldplay, and Travis Scott.

Spotify’s Senior Vice President of Partnerships and Marketing, Marc Hazan, called the collaboration “a natural fit,” adding that Sheeran’s “genuine love of football” made him the perfect artist to headline this year’s El Clásico.

A Capsule Collection and Matchday Soundtrack

Beyond the pitch, Spotify and Barcelona are expanding the partnership into lifestyle and fashion. A limited-edition Spotify x Ed Sheeran x FC Barcelona capsule collection will accompany the jersey drop — only 1,899 units will be released, paying tribute to the club’s founding year.

The collection, inspired by Barça heritage and Sheeran’s creative evolution, includes a retro-themed jersey reminiscent of the 2004/05 season, when Sheeran first began recording music.

Fans will also experience a curated matchday playlist selected by Sheeran himself, available on the FC Barcelona Hub on Spotify, which has already generated over 182 million streams from player playlists featuring stars like Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmatí, Lamine Yamal, and Jules Koundé.

Music and Football: A Shared Rhythm

Even in the dressing room, Sheeran’s presence is already felt. Striker Robert Lewandowski remarked, “Ed’s songs have been part of our playlist for a long time, so seeing his album on our shirt for El Clásico feels really special. Music and football both bring fans together in powerful ways.”

FC Barcelona’s General Manager Manel del Río added, “The logo change has become one of the most iconic moments of every season and exemplifies how far we can go with this union between sport and music.”
