Sony Strengthens Its Sports Technology Empire with Acquisition of STATSports

Sony has taken another major step toward consolidating its position as a global leader in sports technology by acquiring Northern Ireland-based STATSports Group, a renowned sports data and performance analysis company.

The acquisition will see STATSports integrated into Sony’s growing portfolio of sports businesses, which already includes Hawk-Eye Innovations and Beyond Sports. Together, the three entities are set to form a comprehensive, end-to-end sports data and analytics platform that spans athlete performance, officiating, broadcast technology, and fan engagement.

Building the Ultimate Sports Data Ecosystem

This move reflects Sony’s ambition to create a unified ecosystem that connects every layer of the sports experience — from training and match officiating to real-time analytics and audience interaction.

STATSports is a leader in wearable performance technology, trusted by elite teams and national federations worldwide to monitor player performance metrics such as speed, distance, and workload. Its integration with Hawk-Eye’s officiating and tracking systems, along with Beyond Sports’ virtual visualisation technology, positions Sony to deliver an unparalleled data-driven experience across the sports value chain.

Rufus Hack, CEO of Hawk-Eye and Beyond Sports, emphasized the strategic value of the acquisition, noting that STATSports’ culture of innovation and customer focus aligns closely with Sony’s own philosophy.

“From our conversations, it is clear that STATSports is a business and a brand built on a passion for its people and its customers, which is a value we share at Sony’s sports businesses. We are delighted to welcome the STATSports team and believe that this acquisition will be a pivotal moment in the sports technology industry. It will enable us to create a truly comprehensive, end-to-end data and analytics platform for the sports industry, covering data collection, officiating, broadcast, and fan engagement,” Hack said.

Expanding Global Reach and Capabilities

For STATSports, this marks a milestone moment in its 16-year journey from a performance tracking startup to a global industry leader. Co-founder Alan Clarke described the acquisition as both a validation of the company’s innovation and an opportunity to expand its impact.

“This is a landmark day for STATSports. For 16 years, we have been driven by a passion for innovation and a desire to revolutionise sports performance analysis. To be part of the Sony family, and to be aligned with a brand that has such a rich heritage in innovation, is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team. We are excited about the journey ahead and the opportunity to bring our technology to an even wider audience,” Clarke said.

A Defining Moment for Sports Technology

This acquisition signals the continued convergence of sports performance, technology, and entertainment. Sony’s suite of sports technology assets now allows the company to operate across nearly every touchpoint — from the athlete on the field to the viewer at home.

As the global demand for real-time performance insights, immersive broadcasts, and data-driven fan experiences continues to grow, Sony’s integration of STATSports strengthens its position as a driving force behind the future of sports innovation.

In essence, this is not just an acquisition — it’s the formation of a complete sports intelligence ecosystem, uniting performance, precision, and presentation under one brand.
