Everton and Leeds Reach Settlement Over PSR Dispute

Everton and Leeds United have reached an amicable settlement in relation to Everton’s breach of the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) for the 2021/22 season, according to reports from PA and The Athletic. While neither club has released an official statement, the matter is understood to have been resolved during the course of last season.

Background to the Breach

Everton were initially docked 10 points in November 2023 after being found guilty of exceeding allowable losses of £105 million under PSR by £19.5 million. The sanction, one of the heaviest in Premier League history, was later reduced to six points on appeal in February 2024.

The breach had broader implications. In November 2023, the Premier League commission gave five clubs — Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Leicester City, and Burnley — 28 days to confirm whether they would pursue compensation claims linked to Everton’s overspending.

Leeds’ Settlement, Burnley’s Claim Remains

Leeds, who finished just one point and one place behind Everton in the 2021/22 season, were among the clubs most directly impacted. The financial stakes were significant: according to the Premier League’s annual report, Everton earned £1.9 million more than Leeds in merit payments that season.

Leeds’ decision to settle effectively closes their dispute with Everton. However, Burnley still have an active claim, while no progress has been reported from Nottingham Forest, Southampton, or Leicester.

Why It Matters?

The PSR framework continues to dominate the Premier League’s governance agenda, shaping both financial behavior and club strategy. The Everton case has become the reference point for how breaches are handled, influencing how clubs perceive financial risk and regulatory oversight.

For Leeds, settlement ensures closure and certainty at a time when the club’s own financial planning is under scrutiny. For Everton, it reduces potential legal exposure as the club attempts to stabilize under new ownership and navigate another relegation-threatened campaign.
