Fans hoping to show their support for England’s Red Roses at the Women’s Rugby World Cup have been left frustrated, as official replica kits have sold out following a supply chain issue admitted by manufacturer Castore.
Limited Availability Ahead of World Cup Kick-Off
England begin their World Cup campaign against the USA at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light on Friday evening. However, the official tournament shirt — featuring a clean white base with red trim and no sponsor logo (as per World Cup regulations) — has proved almost impossible for supporters to purchase online.
Castore confirmed that current stock has been exhausted on digital platforms, but assured fans that additional shirts will be available for purchase at matchday venues.
Growing Demand, Record Crowds
The supply shortage comes at a time when interest in the women’s tournament is at an all-time high. Organisers have already sold 375,000 of the 470,000 available tickets, including a complete sell-out of the 82,000-seat final at Twickenham. The figures underline the Red Roses’ expanding fan base and the tournament’s potential to set new benchmarks for women’s rugby.
RFU Frustration and Castore’s Track Record
The Rugby Football Union (RFU) is understood to be frustrated by the disruption, given the momentum around the national team and the commercial significance of fan merchandise during a home World Cup.
Castore, a British sportswear brand that unveiled England’s kit earlier this year after replacing Umbro, has faced criticism in the past. Most notably, Aston Villa players raised concerns in 2023 about the performance of their Castore shirts, citing issues with sweat absorption and weight, which eventually led the club to switch suppliers.
The Bigger Picture
For the RFU, this episode highlights the importance of aligning with manufacturers capable of meeting both performance and commercial demands on the global stage. With women’s rugby enjoying unprecedented visibility, the ability to capitalise on merchandising opportunities could prove just as significant as results on the pitch.
