Uzbekistan has unveiled a landmark investment in its sporting future with the opening of a new Olympic Village in Tashkent, a wide-ranging complex anchored by a 12,000-seat stadium.

A Major National Sports Hub

Construction began in November 2021, with CAMC Engineering leading development. Built at a cost of nearly $290m, the 100-hectare site is designed to host world-class multi-sport competitions while also strengthening Uzbekistan’s grassroots sporting infrastructure.

The 12,000-seat stadium will be the centrepiece, hosting opening and closing ceremonies for international tournaments. Alongside its athletics track, green field, and four-storey administrative building, the venue is expected to serve as a hub for national teams and federations.

World-Class Facilities Across Sports

The Olympic Village includes:

  • velodrome with seating for 2,200, approved by the IOC, which can also host fencing and table tennis.
  • water sports venue featuring international-standard swimming and diving pools, with a 2,000-capacity arena certified by World Aquatics for global events.
  • Two indoor arenas — one for volleyball, basketball, and handball, the other dedicated to martial arts.
  • Additional facilities for football, tennis, and field hockey.

Sustainability has also been embedded in the design, with solar panels set to be installed above parking zones to reduce energy consumption.

Presidential Backing

At the opening ceremony, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev framed the complex as a symbol of national ambition:

“We have laid a solid foundation for the health of the young generation and for future victories. But this is only the beginning… the goal is the health and comprehensive development of our youth.”

Mirziyoyev also revealed plans to build similar Olympic Villages in other regions, embedding sport deeper into the country’s cultural and social fabric.

A Rising Sporting Nation

Uzbekistan is becoming an increasingly competitive force on the international stage. At the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, the nation ranked 13th in both medal tables, winning golds in boxing, judo, taekwondo, and wrestling. The new Olympic Village is expected to provide a platform for nurturing the next generation of champions while elevating the nation’s ability to host global tournaments.
