Elon Musk has signaled that his artificial intelligence company, xAI, is preparing to take legal action against Apple over what he describes as anticompetitive practices in its App Store.
Posting on his social platform X late Monday, Musk questioned why neither X nor xAI’s AI assistant, Grok, had been featured in Apple’s “Must Have” section, despite both apps ranking highly in global charts. He pointed out that X currently holds the top spot in news app rankings worldwide, while Grok sits within the top five across all categories.
Musk argued that Apple’s approach effectively prevents AI companies other than OpenAI from securing the number one position in the App Store — calling it “an unequivocal antitrust violation.” He stated that xAI would “take immediate legal action” in response.
Apple has not issued a public statement addressing Musk’s claims. The company’s shares were trading slightly lower in premarket activity following the comments.
The dispute comes at a time when Apple is placing significant emphasis on artificial intelligence. During its recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook confirmed that Apple is increasing its AI-related investments and shifting internal resources toward the sector. Cook also indicated that acquisitions could be on the table to strengthen the company’s AI capabilities.
