Fox Sports NFL analyst Greg Olsen recently spoke with Sports Business Journal’s Austin Karp on the Sports Media Podcast about the future direction of the NFL, the growing international focus, and his continued role in Fox’s broadcast lineup.
18-Game NFL Season ‘Inevitable’
Olsen believes an 18-game regular season is only a matter of time, predicting a shift that could occur by the late 2020s. The key driver, he says, will be the league’s ability to create more TV inventory — including the potential for every franchise to play at least one game abroad each season.
“The league isn’t going to stop growing, especially outside the United States,” Olsen noted. “From a business standpoint, expanding into international markets is the next logical step. More games, more windows, more broadcast opportunities — that’s what grows the cap and the bottom line.”
From the Booth: Year Two in the No. 2 Slot
With Tom Brady stepping into Fox Sports’ lead NFL analyst role, Olsen shifted into the network’s No. 2 commentary team last season — a move he takes in stride.
“This is the big leagues. The nature of the business is constant change,” Olsen said. “I get to call NFL games on one of the biggest stages. It’s a privilege, not something to overdramatize.”
As the NFL eyes new horizons — from longer seasons to broader global reach — voices like Olsen’s continue to provide insight into both the on-field product and the media machine driving it.
