This summer, a vibrant new chapter in grassroots football is being written through ‘Grass to Grace’, an editorial series by Versus in partnership with Kitlocker. The series celebrates the often-overlooked heartbeat of the game: women’s grassroots football and the inclusive communities that sustain it. One of the brightest examples? Cardiff’s TBC FC.
A Team Born from a Group Chat
What started as a casual five-a-side WhatsApp group among friends in Cardiff — with no name, no kits, and barely enough players — has evolved into one of the UK’s most dynamic and inclusive grassroots football teams. TBC FC now represents a beacon for women and non-binary players of all skill levels, creating a joyful, welcoming space for those returning to football or discovering the game for the first time.
With inclusivity and accessibility at the heart of its identity, TBC FC has made football fun and fulfilling for players who often feel sidelined by mainstream pathways.
New Kit, New Era
Until now, the team turned up in mismatched blue shirts and borrowed bibs — but the message they sent was already powerful. With the launch of their custom-designed kit through Grass to Grace, that message now has a visual language: bold, inclusive, and defiant. The new design features the Progress Pride flag, a deliberate and proud choice representing the LGBTQ+ members of the club and a wider message of belonging.
As Maisie Chatfield, one of the team members, explained:
“We want TBC FC to be accessible for everyone — and a real kit makes players feel like they belong.”
What the Kit Really Represents
The kit is about much more than matching shirts. It reflects the journey, growth, and culture of TBC FC:
- Community over competition
- Visibility over exclusion
- Joy over judgment
Sophie Squire, another squad member, captured the impact:
“To have a kit that proudly displays the Progress Pride flag is phenomenal. Little Sophs would be beside herself!”
Holly Charman, who helped establish the team’s presence online, adds:
“We’re showing up, taking space, and creating inclusive communities. Women’s grassroots football is rising — don’t sleep on it.”
Grassroots, Not Small Time
While women’s football is growing across the UK, challenges remain. Financial constraints, lack of infrastructure, and limited visibility continue to plague teams like TBC FC. In Wales particularly, grassroots resources are even scarcer than in England.
But the resilience of teams like TBC FC is unwavering. From covering fees for players in need to building a steady presence on social media, this is a team powered by purpose and passion.
From Grass to Grace
The phrase “Grass to Grace” perfectly encapsulates TBC FC’s evolution — not just in results or recognition, but in culture and community. Today, the team boasts a 20-strong squad, a distinct identity, and now, a kit that mirrors their mission.
For them, grace means more than elegance — it means progress, confidence, belonging.
As Sophie puts it:
“We didn’t expect this. But here we are — with a swanky new kit, a growing community, and a message we’re proud to wear.”
