Switzerland’s hosting of UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 has delivered historic results both on and off the pitch—setting a new benchmark for tournament engagement, attendance, and international momentum.
According to official figures, 461,582 fans attended the group stage matches across eight host cities—the highest-ever in Women’s Euro history. This surpasses the previous record of 357,993 set during England’s 2022 edition and reflects the accelerating popularity of women’s football across Europe.
Out of 24 group matches, 22 were officially sold out, with an average crowd of 19,233 per match. Basel and Bern emerged as critical fan hubs, delivering two attendance records:
- 34,165 fans watched Germany vs Denmark in Basel, setting a new high for any women’s football match in Switzerland
- 29,520 attended Spain vs Portugal in Bern—the most for a group game not involving a host nation
- Germany’s fanbase set another milestone, sending over 17,000 travelling supporters, the highest away fan count in tournament history
Even the host nation broke ground. Switzerland vs Norway drew 34,063 fans in Basel—the largest crowd ever for a Switzerland women’s national team game.
Meanwhile, the football on the pitch matched the fervor in the stands. A record 89 goals were scored in the group stage alone, overtaking the 78-goal record set in 2022.
- Spain equaled England’s 14-goal group stage tally from 2022
- Wales and Poland made their tournament debuts
- Wales’ Jess Fishlock became the oldest goalscorer in tournament history at 38 years and 176 days
UEFA’s Head of Women’s Football, Nadine Kessler, reflected the mood:
“Before a ball was kicked, over 600,000 tickets had already been sold—a record that shows just how powerful and permanent the women’s game has become.”
“This isn’t just a tournament—it’s a movement.”
Women’s Euro 2025 has proven that the women’s football economy is no longer a speculative bet—it’s a proven, scalable entertainment product. What’s particularly notable from a business lens:
- Demand predictability: 600,000+ tickets sold pre-tournament signals event viability and pricing confidence
- Geo-distribution: Eight cities hosting matches reflects how federations are using multi-city strategies to amplify economic impact
- Fan segmentation: High away attendance shows national team followings can now drive international footfall, echoing patterns from men’s tournaments
- Legacy impact: New records for debut teams and veteran players fuel media narratives and brand storytelling
