The Big East Conference has officially rejoined ESPN in a landmark six-year digital media rights agreement that re-establishes one of college sports’ most iconic partnerships. This move ensures that fans will now be able to watch over 300 Big East events annually on ESPN+, reaffirming the conference’s commitment to broad visibility across all 22 sports.
Commissioner Val Ackerman emphasized the significance of the deal, stating it brings much-needed exposure to programs beyond men’s basketball — with particular attention on women’s basketball and Olympic sports. “This exciting partnership with ESPN reinforces our commitment to placing Big East teams front and center on the leading digital sports platform,” Ackerman noted.
The Big East was previously affiliated with ESPN from 1980 to 2013, before shifting to Fox Sports. With ESPN’s loss of Big Ten rights to Fox, NBC, and CBS in 2022, this renewed relationship signals a recalibration of the network’s college sports strategy — one that prioritizes tradition and audience engagement.
Nick Dawson, ESPN’s Senior VP of Programming and Acquisitions, welcomed the development, calling the Big East “one of the country’s premier conferences” and highlighting the network’s enthusiasm about this next chapter.
A Year of Momentum
The agreement follows a competitive 2024-25 campaign that showcased the conference’s enduring quality:
- UConn women’s basketball secured their 12th national championship in April.
- St. John’s men’s team delivered a strong regular season and earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament.
With ESPN+ as the digital home, fans can now expect deeper access, real-time coverage, and enhanced storytelling across marquee and emerging sports alike.
Digital Rights as Strategic Leverage
This move underscores the evolving nature of college sports rights management, especially in the streaming era. By reuniting with ESPN and maximizing digital-first distribution via ESPN+, the Big East has:
- Broadened exposure for Olympic and women’s sports often underrepresented in traditional TV models.
- Strengthened its value proposition to recruits, sponsors, and universities.
- Future-proofed its media footprint in a market increasingly fragmented by streaming ecosystems.
For conferences and leagues worldwide, this deal serves as a blueprint: think platform-first, all-sports-inclusive, and storytelling-centric. ESPN+ isn’t just a streaming platform — it’s a content ecosystem, giving the Big East renewed scale and commercial leverage.
