The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has officially been crowned the world’s most sustainable motorsport venue in the fifth edition of the Sustainable Circuits Index (SCI) — a landmark achievement that reaffirms Spain’s growing leadership in environmentally conscious motorsport operations.
This is the second time in five years the Barcelona circuit has topped the SCI, sharing historical dominance with Italy’s Mugello Circuit, which held the title for the other three years. For 2025, Mugello drops to second place, while Silverstone (UK) and Circuit de la Sarthe (France) — home of the 24 Hours of Le Mans — are tied for third in this global sustainability benchmark.
The SCI is the result of a collaborative study between Enovation Consulting and Prof. Paolo Taticchi of University College London (UCL), which assesses global racing circuits based on a wide range of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) metrics.
Temporary Circuits Ranking: Singapore Leads Again
The SCI also ranked temporary circuits separately, and Singapore’s Marina Bay Street Circuit once again came out on top. Miami International Autodrome and Delfi Rally Estonia followed, reflecting a continued commitment to green innovation even in transient event environments.
Biggest Movers & Honourable Mentions
Japan’s Suzuka Circuit was named the most improved venue in 2025, climbing an impressive 37 positions in the rankings. Special mentions were given to France’s Magny-Cours, USA’s Sonoma Raceway, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, all recognized for marked sustainability enhancements.
The Landscape Is Changing
What stands out in the 2025 edition is the narrowing gap between top-tier and bottom-tier circuits. While the elite ranks remain exclusive — only 15 circuits make it into the top three performance categories — a shift is underway:
- In 2021, 64 circuits were grouped in the lowest sustainability tier.
- In 2025, that number has dropped to 41, while 44 now occupy the second-to-last group — a clear signal that sustainability is climbing the agenda globally.
Why Sustainability Now Equals Competitiveness in Motorsport
For track operators, sustainability is no longer a side project — it’s a competitive asset. Circuits like Barcelona, Mugello, and Silverstone are not just green leaders; they are commercial winners too.
Why it matters for stakeholders:
- Sponsors are increasingly looking to back ESG-compliant venues.
- Series organizers are prioritizing sustainability in calendar planning.
- Fans and future talent are aligning with socially responsible platforms.
- Local governments offer preferential treatment to environmentally aligned facilities.
The takeaway? Circuits that invest in green transformation now are more likely to future-proof their commercial models in a sport that is undergoing a seismic shift in stakeholder expectations.
