In a bid to reignite domestic interest and player development pathways, Rugby Australia (RA) has announced the launch of a new competition — Super Rugby AUS — set to debut in September 2025. With just four weeks of competition culminating in a grand final, this short-format tournament is being positioned as both a high-performance bridge and a fan re-engagement tool for the sport.
But beneath the headlines, this new venture is more than just a new tournament. It’s a test case for whether rugby union in Australia can re-engineer its commercial and calendar strategy in the post-COVID era.
Competition Format and Intent
- Teams: ACT Brumbies, NSW Waratahs, Queensland Reds, Western Force
- Structure: Round-robin format (Sept 13–28), grand final (Oct 5)
- Venues: Local and regional grounds, including Viking Park and Narrabri (Santos Festival of Rugby)
- Broadcast: Free-to-air on Nine Network and Stan Sport (per extended RA-Nine deal)
Crucially, Super Rugby AUS will operate in tandem with the U19 Super Rugby Men’s competition, indicating a clear emphasis on holistic development and extended fan touchpoints.
Why This Matters: Context Behind the Launch
Rugby Australia is in urgent need of stability — both on the field and in its financial books:
- A$36.8 million loss in 2024, up from A$9.2 million in 2023
- A$80 million loan in 2023, with A$60 million already spent
- Previous competitions like the NRC and Super Rugby AU were shelved due to cost and COVID disruption
Super Rugby AUS aims to provide game time for non-national team players during the lengthy gap between the Super Rugby Pacific season (Feb–June) and international fixtures. But it’s also clearly designed to be a broadcastable product that fills airtime, feeds local fandom, and leverages existing infrastructure without incurring excessive new costs.
Strategic Interpretation: What RA Is Really Doing
- Calendar Optimisation
This is RA finding value in the “dead zones” of the rugby calendar. Filling post-Super Rugby gaps maintains player conditioning and keeps fans engaged year-round. - Localisation & Community Grounds
Taking matches to regional venues is smart — not just for optics, but to rebuild the grassroots connection and create full-stadium atmospheres on modest budgets. - Content Is Currency
With its expanded partnership with Nine Entertainment, RA needs premium, controllable content. Super Rugby AUS delivers that. - Stopgap or Sustainable Model?
This model, while efficient, is short. RA will need to prove its value with fan engagement metrics, viewership numbers, and commercial interest to justify long-term integration.
Looking Ahead: The Lions Tour Lifeline
Rugby Australia is projecting a record financial surplus in 2025, banking heavily on the upcoming British & Irish Lions Tour — a marquee commercial asset with strong ticketing and broadcast draw.
With three test matches and six additional fixtures scheduled, RA hopes this tour can plug critical financial gaps, including the servicing of its outstanding debt.
Super Rugby AUS represents a strategic hedge: low-risk, high-utility, and broadcast-friendly. But it will only succeed if RA uses it as a platform for long-term value creation — not a temporary fix.
To thrive beyond 2025, RA must:
- Formalise a multi-year domestic competition strategy
- Reintroduce sustainable second-tier structures
- Commercialise regional games with local partners
- Reinforce pathways from youth to pro within an integrated ecosystem
