UFC Returns to Mainland China with Two Major Events in Shanghai

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is set to make a much-anticipated return to mainland China, announcing two landmark events in Shanghai this August. This marks the first time the world’s premier mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion will host a live event in the country since 2019.

Two Action-Packed Events

  • UFC Fight Night Shanghai will take place on August 23 at the Shanghai Indoor Arena.
  • The day prior, August 22, the city will also host the semifinals of Road to UFC Season Four — a platform designed to identify and elevate top MMA talent from Asia.

Orange Lion Sports has been appointed as the official event promoter for UFC’s Shanghai showcase.

A Historic Return to the Mainland

This double-header marks UFC’s fourth event in mainland China, and the first since Shenzhen hosted a Fight Night in 2019. The return to Shanghai carries special meaning, as the city was the site of UFC’s first-ever event in China back in 2017. It is also home to the UFC Performance Institute and the organization’s Asia headquarters, further cementing Shanghai’s strategic importance to the brand.

Chinese Athletes on the Rise

UFC’s renewed push into the Chinese market aligns with the emergence of a powerful local talent pool. Leading the charge is Zhang Weili, the reigning women’s strawweight champion and one of the sport’s most recognizable global stars. She is joined by rising contenders Song Yadong and Zhang Mingyang, both making waves in their respective divisions.

The organization’s commitment to China is also reflected in its high-value media partnership with Migu, a digital subsidiary of China Mobile. The five-year broadcast deal, signed in 2021, is reportedly worth a high eight-figure sum, underscoring the UFC’s confidence in China’s long-term potential as a key MMA market.

Statement from UFC Leadership

“Shanghai holds special significance for UFC,” said Kevin Chang, UFC Senior Vice President and Head of Asia. “It hosted our first event in mainland China in 2017, and it’s the home of our UFC Performance Institute and Asia HQ. Our Chinese athletes are making a statement in UFC — they are a force to be reckoned with, and we are excited to showcase their talent in the city where it all began.”

Conclusion

The UFC’s return to Shanghai is more than just a live event — it’s a reaffirmation of the promotion’s long-term vision for Asia. With local heroes, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and a growing fan base, Shanghai is set to be a central hub in the UFC’s global expansion strategy.
